Questionnaire Share

Many of you filled out anonymous questionnaires and sent them back to me with your cameras. The effort you put in and the honesty you gave, is something I am grateful for.

Like in your photographs, I can't help but notice the shared emotions and perspectives in your writing. As diverse as your backgrounds, personalities and locations might be, you share common life experiences. As a result I'm going to start posting questionnaires from time to time - a random selection. Double click on them to make them large enough to read.

Enjoy! -Kate

Marion Post Wolcott (by Elyssa Marcus)

Marion Post Wolcott was a female documentary photographer.  During the Great Depression, Wolcott photographed the work of the Farm Security Administration, which depicted poverty and desparity.  Later, she heard and saw the injustices and horrifying actions towards the European Jews during the Holocaust and she was luckily able to flee to America.  In America she continued her documentary work opposing Facist movements and promoting peace.

Jo Spence (by Elyssa Marcus)

Jo Spence is most famous for her self-portraits depicting her journey with breast cancer.  Her most notable collection "A Picture of Heath?"features this struggle.  She used phototherapy (photography as a cure for emotional instability) during her traditional Chinese cancer treatment.  She studied the medical various medical institutions she passed through and the relationship between patient and doctor.  Spence portrayed feelings of having no control over her life and worthlessness through her depression from battling cancer.

In the 1970's Spence turned to documentary work.  As a socialist and feminist, she had very strong political views that she made clear in her photographs.

Jo Spence died in 1992 in London.
